How to customize a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 Form
There are two ways you can customize a Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 form. The most common forms are the Lead, Account and Opportunity forms. One way to customize these forms is by making changes from the form itself, the other is from the Settings screens. This blog post will give you a step by step guide in how to edit Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 forms. (Only the person with the proper rights will be able to customize the fields within these forms. If options listed below do not appear within the user interface, you will need to request the proper rights from the systems administrator)
Step by Step Guide in Customizing forms in Microsoft Dynamics 2011
From the Dynamics 2011 Home page click Sales then click Lead, Account or Opportunity (The form you want to customize)

Once the Opportunities, Account or Lead list appears click the New record button.

Outlines around the Cells and fields indicate the ability to edit the form. The fields on the right are preconfigured fields you can add to the form. For any new fields, custom from the current list, the user will need to click New Field.

Once in the New Field prompt fill out the necessary information. You can change the way users interact with the field by configuring what type of answer you require. The type options are very intuitive; just remember once you save the custom field you can only edit the Type filed from the Settings Customization prompt.

The example I am using is: Blog Post Test. For the Type in this example we will choose the Two Option preconfigured selection. This can be customized further to change the answer from Yes / No to any two answers the user chooses. Make sure you select the Default Value meaning the answer you would like to appear when a new form is created. If you want your users to select from more than two options you should select Type - Option Set. You can further customize these options. Once you have finished selecting the options provided click Save and Close.
The new field will now appear in the fields list.

To add the field to the form, simply drag the field into the form until a red line appears. This will indicate when the field will reside.

Once you have completed your edits to the form click Save then Publish.

The other way to add fields to a Dynamics CRM 2011 form it to edit fields under the following breadcrumb. Settings – Customize the System – Entities – “Form you would like to edit (Lead, Account, Opportunity)”. This is the only place you can delete unwanted fields that you have created.

"401 unauthorized" error while browsing the SharePoint application from the server
Consider this... You create a new web application using the NETBIOS name or host name of the machine, use any port, and you have no issues browsing that same application in a browser on the server. Now consider this, you create a new web application where the URL is NOT the NETBIOS or host name. When browsing the site, you get prompted for credentials 3 times with no success. You might even have this site in your trusted zones, but it still asks you for credentials! This is by design for Server 2008 and Server 2003:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861
When you use the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or a custom host header to browse a local Web site that is hosted on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.1 or a later version, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:The KB article explains this well. You can either follow the steps in the KB article or add a custom entry to your local host file on a different machine! This is important because adding your address to a local host file assures that the host name is passed to the IP address specified. This is useful when DNS has not yet been configured. I would only consider the KB article changes if I had no other choice but to test applications from the server. This is a security feature, not a bug. :)

Introducing Michael S. - SENIOR SHAREPOINT DEVELOPER/ARCHITECT
SUMMARY
I am a Senior Consultant and Application Architect with fifteen years of professional development experience. I am a strong proponent of the Agile Software Development methodology. This OOA/OOD methodology consists of a series of principles and practices to produce code that can easily adapt to change. It uses patterns and test-driven design to force decoupling of code modules. I have designed several systems from scratch with minimal client requirements specifications. I am skilled in interacting with clients and managers to build a more detailed requirement specification leading to architectural design and code from database structure to UI layout. I am also skilled at teaching/mentoring and have spoken at the Atlanta Code Camp on the principles of Agile, MVVM, WPF and WCF. MVVM (Model, View, View Model) is a methodology that brings the principles of Agile to the UI layer by decoupling the presentation from the business logic.

Managed Metadata and Creating the Central Taxonomy in SharePoint 2010
Planning Managed Metadata
Planning and organizing managed metadata involves the following steps:
1. Identify term sets.
2. Identify the owner of each term set.
3. Determine term set groups.
4. Define term sets.
The first three tasks are often performed by a group, a solution architect, or a taxonomist. The fourth task, defining term sets, can be distributed to the owners of the term sets.
For the explanation of these for topics please read the following TechNet article:
Creating the Central Taxonomy
An organization's taxonomy is defined in the Term Store Management Tool – this is part of the Managed Metadata service application, and can be accessed either from Central Administration or from within Site Settings. Permissions are defined within the Term Store itself.
For my demo I “borrowed” the taxonomy from a popular UK electrical retailer, and added the terms manually (but note you can also import from CSV). The following image shows the different types of node used to structure and manage a SharePoint 2010 taxonomy, and also the options available to manage a particular term:

For more information on Term store please visit Chris O'Brien's blog post:

Microsoft SharePoint Designer cannot create Project Server workflows
Project Server Overview:
Microsoft Project Server 2010 is designed to support high levels of programmer productivity by building on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. Developers can extend the Project Web App user interface with Web Parts developed with Microsoft ASP.NET 3.5, define workflows using Windows Workflow Foundation, and enforce business rules using Project Server events and the Web services of the Project Server Interface (PSI).
Project Server & SharePoint Server Overview
Project Web App is built upon SharePoint Server 2010, and uses master pages and Web Parts to make it easier to build custom Project Web App solutions. SharePoint Server 2010 also provides core infrastructure services for Project Server such as administration, security, the reporting center using Excel services, and common workflow activities. Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 hosts the Windows Workflow Foundation run-time engine.
Project Server 2010 integrates deeply with SharePoint Server 2010 as the platform for project collaboration, reporting, site administration, and workflow management. The project sites include specialized SharePoint lists for tracking issues, risks, project deliverables, and the team calendar, along with the document library and team discussions. Project Server 2010 provides flexibility for team collaboration; for example, you can locate project sites anywhere within the SharePoint server farm where Project Server is installed. To use other core services of SharePoint Server 2010, such as Excel Services and Enterprise Search, an administrator needs to enable and configure the services.
Project Server 2010 installation also provisions the Project Service Application in the SharePoint Web Services site, which includes the local ASMX Web services and Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) services for the PSI. Service applications in SharePoint Foundation 2010 replace the Shared Service Provider in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. The change enables third-party developers to create custom service applications using the Service Application Framework. In addition to the Project Service Application, other examples of service applications include SharePoint Search and SharePoint Document Management. F

Solution
The work around for this problem is to create the workflow is SharePoint Designer and implement it into SharePoint Server 2010 and not Project Server 2010.

The Total Economic Impact of Implementing SharePoint 2010
- Achieving cost savings by consolidating enterprise functionality and implementing new capabilities offered by implementing SharePoint 2010. Companies in the study cited actual, or potential for, lower costs of software with the move to consolidate on the Microsoft platform, thus eliminating older, more expensive software and support agreements with other vendors.
- Consolidating the proliferation of collaboration tools. As one interviewee stated, “Having too many tools becomes an impediment to collaboration.”
- Empowering business units to manage more of their own collaboration and content tools, while freeing IT resources that were previously tied to administrative, maintenance, and customization tasks.
- Easing the efforts required to find structured and unstructured content inside the organization as well as externally.
- Improving process efficiencies and workflow management and improving collaboration across the enterprise.
- Building capabilities for integrating legacy data stores, financial data, and a wide variety of enterprise content and business intelligence applications in SharePoint 2010.
- Creating options to gain potential future benefits from relatively easy integration of business intelligence, and ERP, CRM, and other line-of-business applications.
- Changing training from traditional instructor-led classroom courses, requiring travel, to self-serve and just-in-time delivery of corporate education.
- Improving worker productivity by providing integrated content and record management that uses a consistent data classification interface, as well as more end user-accessible content management.
- Enabling enterprise governance and policies around currently unstructured data processes to enhance risk management.
- Taking advantage of the co-authoring capabilities so that more than one employee at a time can work on a content item.
- Leveraging .NET development skills within the organization to build new classes of content-centric applications. Reducing hardware footprint.
All companies in the study are in the early stages of SharePoint 2010 adoption, making productivity measurement and estimates less reliable than for mature software investments. Yet a strong business case exists based on hard cost savings. Most of the companies in the study described their SharePoint 2010 investment as a natural upgrade path from SharePoint 2003 and 2007 to continue to build a collaborative information system of record and to move away from disparate software applications and file shares to team and personal sites, blogs, wikis, and other Web 2.0 functionality. Most companies reported an expected drop in IT staff dedicated to servicing business unit applications.

Implementing SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Search Adobe PDF IFilter
In reality, SharePoint Enterprise Search supports only Office documents out of the box. Additional configuration steps are necessary to support PDF and other document formats. Some of the default values are also not practical in 99.9% (one of them being the maximum size of searchable documents). This is where working with SharePoint experts makes a difference. Researching optimal configuration values for various SharePoint services can be time consuming because they are poorly documented in the context of SharePoint 2010 search implementation
Most articles on the web talk about configuring the PDF iFilter and fail to mention an important configuration step which can lead to misleading errors in the crawl log stating that some files are "corrupted" or that your iFilter is not working properly. This error is reported by the "Gatherer" process which is part of the indexing engine in SharePoint. For all non-Office document formats (and that includes the ubiquitous PDF format), SharePoint 2010 requires additional configuration - and the correct version of the iFilter component. IFilter is used internally to index documents and make them searchable.
To avoid this error, we will go through IFilter and Gatherer configuration steps. We are making an assumption that Index server and Search service are already configured.
1. install PDF iFilter for 64 bit. PDF iFilter is part of Adobe Reader package. Download the latest version of the Adobe Reader and install it on the indexing server.
2. Follow the steps in the walk-through document available on the Adobe site . Configuration steps are the same for SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010 environment. The only difference is that "12.0" must be replaced with "14.0".
For example, the registry path
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\12.0\Search\Applications…"
becomes
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\14.0\Search\Applications..."
2. Install the PDF icon (easy fix: ttp://www.codeplex.com/SharePointPdfIcon). This step is necessary to make all PDF files in SharePoint appear with the PDF icon.
3. Add Adobe iFilter folder to the PATH environment variable:
Go to Control Panel-->System and Security-->System
Click on Advanced System Settings
Click on Environment Variables
Select PATH variable
Click on Edit
Append ";C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms\bin" at the end of the PATH. Note the semicolon separator at the beginning.
4. Configure maximum file size setting for the Gathering Manager. This step is critical for success of your configuration. We will use Registry editor to add this setting.
In \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\14.0\Search\Global\Gathering Manager, add "MaxDownloadSize" REG_DWORD and set its value to 0xFFFFFFF (4294967295 decimal).
This step is often missing from configuration instructions and it will make or break your search. Note that this setting is required for proper functioning of the gatherer/indexer process in SharePoint.
5. Stop and start the search service. Do an IISRESET
net stop osearch14
net start osearch14
iisreset
6. Run a full crawl
That's it. Very simple once you understand the dependencies between services supporting the SharePoint search.

SharePoint 2010 Search Engine Optimization - SEO Tips from SharePoint Experts
Implementing SharePoint 2010 for an Internet facing site that is Search Engine Optimizated (SEO) can be challenging, but is very important. Who doesn’t want their sites to be visited by more people? SEO is not a very simple task and the rules are constantly changing, it needs to be planned at the very beginning during you SharePoint design phase. I worked on many sites before, different topics, but they all landed into the first page of search engine results for certain keywords. I didn’t use any black hat tricks in my work, they might have better result at the beginning, but they would get punished when search engines change or improve. Of course – always make sure you have awesome content in the sites, that is the key. Remember, by following the right way, even a site with all hand-crafted static HTML pages could get much more traffic than a complex WCM system.
Let’s take a look at my quick check list of SEO:
- Use meaningful site names and page names to create “friendly” URLs.
Think about these examples:
http://foo.com/nodes/123
http://foo.com/blog/sharepoint-2010-search-engine-optimization-seo-tips/
http://foo.com/blog/sharepoint2010/seo/tips/
Which one would be more likely to get traffic? Definitely that’s not the first one. How about the second and the third? Most of the time the second one will get more traffic, depending on the keywords. Pages with a very deep URL (sites1/sites2/sites3/sites4/page1.html) is unlikely to get a better ranking. In SharePoint 2010, you need to carefully plan your site infrastructure and page names so it can be more meaningful to the crawlers and the users.
- Great Page Titles
Give the pages better titles, it’s one of the important factor for search, from the query algorithm to user experience. For example, “Untitled” “New-Page-1” does not make sense. Even if it can be shown in the result, very few people will likely to click on it. A good SharePoint 2010 page title would be something like the site intro page title for example: “SharePoint is Awesome – Trainings, Demos, Hands on Labs” or a sub site page title: “SharePoint is Awesome – Search Engines Optimization Explained”.
- Accurate Meta Elements.
Search Engines uses meta elements like <description> , <language> and <robots> to crawl the pages. <keywords> is no longer used. Within the three, <description> has more influence on the ranking. You can customize these meta elements with SharePoint Designer.
- Up-to-date Sitemap.xml and Robots.txt, and even a HTML sitemap page that provides all the links.
Sitemaps can be submitted to search engines, and they can also be picked up with the reference from Robots.txt. For SharePoint 2010, you can use my script here: Generate SharePoint 2010 Sitemap with Windows PowerShell to create the sitemap file. And then use Task Scheduler to run it everyday. Robots.txt can be used to point search engines to the sitemap files, and prevent some of the folders from being crawled.
- Search Engine Friendly Redirects
Some search engines, prefer 301 (Permanent) redirects to 302 (Temporary) redirects. Out of the box SharePoint uses 302 redirects to maintain flexibility of site creations and variations. But you can override this behavior by different methods. For example this and this are achieved by using URL Rewrite Module in IIS SEO Kit.
- Search Engine Friendly Menus and Navigations
Use Text! Avoid from using Flash/Silverlight/Javascripts for navigation menus because they are hard to be picked up by the crawlers. If you have to use technologies for menus , provide an alternative if possible. Don’t forget accessibility is also very important, although not quite related with SEO.
- Faster Page Response Time.
Recently Google put site speed into their ranking calculation algorithms. This is not a very important factor, but worth considering. Something can be put into consideration are caching, load balancing, network infrastructure optimization. In SharePoint 2010, Developer Dashboard is a great feature to help to analyze page loading time – for example webpart loading time. In this way you will know if some webparts should fixed or removed.
- Better anchor text for links, alt text for images.
Anchor text can give search engines better understanding for the pages pointed to. You can take it as “another title” for the target pages. Alt text for images are also good to have.
- Always provides text based content for rich media.
Think about a video file, a Flash/Silverlight application or a podcast on your website, how can it be indexed and showed in search result? Title and tags are important. But more importantly, you can improve the result by providing transcript to the video/audio, or text alternatives to your Flash/Silverlight applications. Certain features in Silverlight can also help. For more information on Silverlight SEO, please check http://www.silverlight.net/learn/whitepapers/seo-for-silverlight/.
- Use Webmaster Tools to submit sitemap, check results.
Search Engines provide webmaster tools to help people to submit and optimize their sites.
Bing: http://www.bing.com/webmaster
Google: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/
You don't have to be a SharePoint Expert to understand this. This checklist can help you get started your project. But don’t forget to promote your site as much as you can. More links coming from important websites can bring up your ranks significantly. And don’t use spamlinks or hidden text – these can get your site a very low score in the long time.

Business Connectivity Services (BCS) in SharePoint Foundation 2010 & SharePoint Server 2010
Example:
When connecting your users in a SharePoint deployment to an external SQL table containing business contacts. Rather than bringing this data into a SharePoint list, you can leave it right in SQL. Fire up SharePoint Designer to create an external data source to this table, and you’ll be able to associate this data as a contact once Outlook touches it.
This is all possible by utilizing external content types in SharePoint. A user can then make changes to the contact (that will appear as a regular contact in Outlook), and the changes are immediately reflected in the SQL table.
In Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010, Microsoft Business Connectivity Services (BCS) is designed to enable easy interaction with external systems from within SharePoint.
Business Connectivity Services in SharePoint Foundation 2010 is composed of the following features:
- Business Data Connectivity (BDC) service
- BDC Connectors and the pluggable Connector Framework
- External lists
- External data columns
Business Data Connectivity (BDC) service is the new version of the Business Data Catalog that was provided in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. BDC, now provided in Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010, is implemented as a shared service and still relies on the Metadata Store. The BDC Service enables you to declaratively model external systems so that you can expose external data in SharePoint Server 2010 (and, with Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 with Enterprise Client Access License, in Microsoft Office 2010 applications also). BDC bridges the gap between SharePoint sites and your business applications, and enables you to bring in key data from various external systems to SharePoint lists (via the new external lists feature and external data columns), Web Parts, search, user profiles, and custom applications.
As a SharePoint Developer you have to consider the core function of the BDC is to provide connectivity to various kinds of external systems, and it has built-in support for connecting to the following kinds of data sources:
- Databases
- Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and web services
- Microsoft .NET Framework assemblies
- Custom data sources
The following is a high-level diagram of the BDC.

BDC is designed to enable a SharePoint Developer to expose business data from various external systems declaratively, with very little coding. To achieve this , BDC provides homogeneous access to the underlying data sources through a metadata model that provides a consistent and simplified client object model.

SharePoint 2010 Security - Migrating from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010, Classic Based Authentication or Claims Based Authentication?
If you are planning on implementing SharePoint 2010 and migrating a SharePoint 2007 web application that contains Active Directory users, Claims Based Authentication using AD will cause a disconnection for the users! For those of you who are already experts in using WIF, this wouldn't seem trivial, but it is helpful for SharePoint Administrators that are planning a migration strategy. Because the Active Directory users in Claims Based Authentication work differently behind the scenes than the Classic Mode Authentication, any user in your migrated content database will not be able to access their SharePoint 2007 content inside your SharePoint 2010 environment.
Claims Based Authentication is something every one should consider for their SharePoint 2010 roll-out, but those who migrate from SharePoint 2007 (with Active Directory users) will most likely want to stick with Classic Mode Authentication. Option are available, but need to be well planned before making the move.

UPDATE REGARDING THE ASP.NET VULNERABILITY - MICROSOFT SECURITY BULLETIN MS10-070
Awhile I blogged about the information received at IncWorx regarding an ASP.NET vulnerability. This vulnerability affects anyone that is running an ASP.NET public facing web application or a SharePoint web appliction (SharePoint 2007 & SharePoint 2010). Due to the severity of this vulnerability, Microsoft released a series of .NET patches on Tuesday afternoon. Below is a list of just Server 2003 & Server 2008 hotfix links to properly patch your servers. Please note that the full list can be found on the MS10-070 bulletin. Again, if you are running a public facing ASP.NET or SharePoint website, it is high recommended that you install these .NET hotfixes as soon as possible.

- Establish Rate: This will depend on duration of project, level of expertise, and how many SharePoint Consultants will be needed for the project. I would start high and negotiate down. Depending on how big your firm is depends on what the acceptable rates are. This can range from $80-$250.
- Determine Level of Expertise: Is the prospect looking for a SharePoint Consultant that is at the SharePoint Architect, SharePoint Developer, SharePoint Administrator, of SharePoint Power User level
- Duration: Find out the duration of the project. This is important because if you don't have the resource in-house you will need this information to pitch to SharePoint Consultants outside of your firm
- Start Date: Find out how soon they need the resource. If you work for a firm that has many open requisitions you can easily get your position bumped to the top if the close date is closer. This will also help the recruitment department
- Overview: A general overview of the position is nice to establish for your knowledge and also identifying of the right person i.e. We are looking for a very talented Visual Studio Workflow Developer. The majority of the work will be creating InfoPath 2007 forms and experience with validation and creating views is a must. The forms will have to be automated within a Visual Studio 2008 Workflows. A strong understanding of SharePoint (MOSS 2007) will be needed for the integration through SharePoint's (MOSS 2007) Business Data Catalog. Data will also have to be pulled from SQL to prepopulate InfoPath fields.
