SharePoint Designer 2010 Errors and bugs

Thursday, August 26, 2010 by Brian Prigge
A client reached out to us today regarding a SharePoint Designer error they were receiving.  After creating a new site collection in SharePoint 2010, they attempted to customize SharePoint.  Any page they attempted to load gave them the error below.

"soap:ServerServer was unable to process request. ---> Value does not fall within the expected range."

After looking into their SharePoint deployment, I found that the host header value was properly entered into IIS, but the Alternate Access Mapping had not been added to SharePoint.  Therefore, when the client browsed to the url within Internet Explorer, they were able to view and interact with the pages, but any interaction attempted outside of Internet Explorer threw the error above.

After adding the Alternate Access Mapping, the error was resolved and the client was able to customize SharePoint to keep their internal branding consistent.

That Alternate Access Mapping settings can be found under:
SharePoint 2010 Central Administration > Application Management > Configure Alternate Access Mappings.
