How do I Add a Visio Diagram to a Web Part in SharePoint 2010

SharePoint Help: The following post will show users how to place a Visio diagram on a SharePoint 2010 site. This is a quick and easy way to customize SharePoint pages.

  • Click Edit

Step 1

  • Click Insert
  • Click Web Part

Step 2

  • Click inside the web part you intend the Visio diagram to be placed

Step 3

  • Select Business Data
  • Select Visio Web Access
  • Click Add

Step

The web part interface will now appear in the web part location you selected

Step 4

You can do the next part either at the start of the project or at the end but you will need for the Visio Diagram to live within a list or a library somewhere. I created a list in the web part to the right of the Visio web part and uploaded my Visio Diagram to this list. I am uploading an Entity Relationship Diagram into the web part. This is an easy way to share a Visio Diagram on a SharePoint Implementation. First you have to make sure that the Visio Diagram is saved as a Web Drawing. This can be done by following the steps below:

  • Open the Visio Diagram
  • Click File
  • Click Save As
  • Save as file type: Web Drawing

Step 5

Once the Visio is in the document library you can pull the URL by:

  • Clicking drop down
  • Send to
  • Email a Link

Step

Save that link we will need it in the next step

In the Visio web part

  • Click “Click here to open the tool pane”
  • Once the tool pane opens on the right enter the URL we stole from the email:

Step 6

  • Click Ok

The Visio Diagram will now appear in the web part:

Hey Michael, thanks for the blog post. I was trying to determine if this particular feature would be feasible for a work process that I am trying to display in a document set. This was very helpful in helping me to identify this as a valid route to proceed down.

Hi, Michael
Could you tell me if it is possible, once you've added the diagram in the web part, to use the hyperlinks in that diagram to open another diagram in the same web part?
Currently, when I follow the hyperlink in the first diagram, it opens the following diagram (also a .vdw file) in Visio and not in the web part within SharePoint.
